He served as a staff orthopedic surgeon in the United States Navy and as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University.

Dr. Makowiec has served on numerous committees and leadership positions throughout his career, including Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery Division and Vice President of Medical Staff at Franciscan Health Indianapolis Mooresville Hospital.
