Dr. Brian Murphy is a fellowship-trained hip and knee replacement surgeon with a passion for helping patients get back to the activities they love.
Dr. Murphy specializes in total joint replacement, including anterior total hip replacement, total knee replacement, computer-navigated joint replacement, and revision hip and knee replacement.
He combines decades of orthopedic experience with careful listening to help people decide on their best course of care. Orthopedics, especially hip and knee replacement, fascinates Dr. Murphy because of its ability to dramatically improve people’s quality of life.
Dr. Murphy joined Indiana Orthopedic Institute because of its commitment to being physician-led, placing the focus on the doctor-patient relationship. He describes that relationship as a partnership, with the goal of providing people with the knowledge to make the best decisions for their health.
A native of Northwest Indiana, he has spent most of his career treating patients in the Indianapolis and Bloomington areas. Dr. Murphy and Dr. Michael Meneghini, founder and CEO of Indiana Orthopedic Institute, trained together early in their careers in Chicago.
Dr. Murphy completed a bachelor’s degree in biology from Indiana University in Bloomington before earning a master’s degree in physiology and biophysics from IU in Indianapolis and completing his medical degree from the IU School of Medicine.
His training includes completing an Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago and an Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL.
Dr. Murphy previously practiced at American Health Network, part of Optum, and at Bloomington Bone and Joint Clinic.
Born and raised in Indiana he remains deeply rooted in the state. He’s held IU football season tickets for well over a decade, especially enjoying the Hoosiers’ national championship run. He and his wife also have been season ticket holders for IU Basketball for more than two decades. They have two children, the entire family avid tennis players. Dr. Murphy loves gardening and being outside. He also has plenty of pets—two dogs, two cats, fish, and chickens.
