Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine

Sports medicine is a medical specialty focused on preventing and treating injuries and issues related to sports, exercise, and physical activity. Our services are for the athlete in all of us (professional and the rest of us!) but also for anyone dealing with musculoskeletal injuries and issues while trying to live an active life. We treat patients from adolescents through seniors. We specialize in ACL reconstruction, knee and shoulder arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, and other sports-related injuries and general orthopedic conditions.

Sports Injuries and Much More

The drive to be healthier is the drive to move more. We treat everyone from adolescents to the senior looking to move without pain. Most conditions are initially treated non-surgically, with therapies, rest, or injections. The physician-patient relationship is crucial for discussing all options with you, and Indiana Orthopedic Institute is guided by treating everyone as if they were our own family.

Common Sports Medicine Knee Injuries

Knee problems are common for people of all ages. When the complex structures of the knee—bone, cartilage, ligaments, and fluid—are injured or compromised by disease such as osteoarthritis, everyday activities can become painful and difficult. Problems can include injuries to ligaments, supporting tendons, the meniscus, knee dislocation, patellar (kneecap) fractures, and other issues.

ACL strains and tears  An ACL injury is a complete or partial tear or a stretching of the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, in your knee. The ACL connects your thigh bone and shin bone. These injuries occur in sports with sudden cuts and direction changes, such as soccer, basketball, and skiing. Many people suffer ACL injuries from everyday activities such as falls, awkward movements, or muscle imbalances. Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, are common, frustrating, and sometimes painful. Proper treatment and recovery can help you get back to the activities and lifestyle you love.

Meniscus tears and other knee issues  The meniscus is strong yet flexible cartilage that acts as a cushion or shock absorber while also stabilizing your knee. Tears can happen in a variety of ways, including twisting or overextending your knee, or quickly changing direction in sports like basketball or pickleball. Treatments include nonsurgical and surgical options. The approach to care can depend on a patient’s age, goals, lifestyle, and the severity of the tear.

It is also important to remember that we are all unique and each person’s injury or condition, and its treatment, will be a little different too. Treatment options will vary depending on the details of your problem and your treatment plan will be tailored to your circumstances and goals.

Common Sports Medicine Shoulder Injuries

Pain, weakness, stiffness, or limited range of motion in your shoulder are common symptoms of underlying conditions. If you experience any of these, it’s important to consult with a specialist to determine the cause.
Shoulder pain can have multiple causes, with the rotator cuff among the most common. The rotator cuff, which keeps your shoulder stable, is a group of muscles and tendons holding the top of your upper arm bone in the socket of your shoulder.

Injuries to the rotator cuff often happen from long-term wear and tear, whether from everyday tasks like lifting or activities such as swimming and golf. Such injuries eventually can lead to problems including tendinitis, bursitis, or tears of the rotator cuff. A damaged rotator cuff can cause significant pain that limits your ability to lift objects and get a restful night’s sleep.
