Lora Bentley recently retired with no plans to slow down. She was active in family life, took long walks, and hit the gym five days a week.
Yet severe pain in her right hip for a year and a half hampered her daily movement and happiness. The Noblesville resident visited her primary care provider, a sports medicine specialist, and went to physical therapy.
“It just didn’t help the pain much,” Lora said. “Going up stairs, just my daily life, was painful.”
Imaging revealed that the pain was from her IT band and tendons. The good news is she did not need surgery. But she was searching for answers.
Lora eventually scheduled an appointment with IOI CEO and surgeon, Dr. Michael Meneghini, who suggested she try shockwave therapy, a new treatment available at Indiana Orthopedic Institute’s flagship center in Noblesville.
So, she met with IOI Physical Therapist Kraig Brittain to get started - five shockwave treatments over five weeks, each session lasting just 5 to 10 minutes.
The handheld shockwave device delivers repetitive, intense, short acoustic energy waves to the affected area to promote healing and reduce pain.
During treatment, Kraig increased the shockwave intensity, which hurt but proved more effective, she said. After her treatment, Kraig would have Lora walk down the hallway and upstairs to check progress.
"I did notice some immediate relief right after treatment, the pain continued to improve over time as well,” Lora said.
Kraig also gave her PT exercises focused on her IT band and tendons. The hip pain is so reduced that she’s back going to the gym, walking a mile or more, and - this is huge for her - sleeping on her right side again.
“My pain is so reduced, like 90 percent,” Lora said. “Day in and day out, I don't notice it.”
